Obtaining summer experiences while still in high school can help forge the path of students on their road to success.

LEAD(Leadership Education And Development) is a  national  partnership of business and academia that encourages the best and brightest high school  students to pursue  careers in business.  An unprecedented opportunity,  LEAD selects  talented  and  promising  high school students to participate  in  comprehensive summer business institutes at twelve of the top graduate business schools in the U.S. by providing students with a  broad  perspective of the business  world,  LEAD helps  students choose  the best  career  direction, and provides them with the information they need to map an educational path to success.

After completing  the summer program,  LEAD supports students  through college and beyond by opening doors  to our partners  mentoring  programs,  internships and  permanent  jobs.  LEAD gives students the necessary  edge  for  success.  And  for  LEAD's  partners, a way of  recruiting and  connecting with bright, motivated students to create an impressive pool of future executive talent.

LEAD's Success

  • More than half of LEAD alumni enroll in the top 50 U.S. universities and liberal arts colleges. 
  • Nearly two-thirds are pursuing degrees in economics, accounting, engineering, finance, management, and other business related fields.
  • The earliest LEAD alumni, now in their mid 30's, are achieving major leadership roles in companies in every industry and sector of American business and government.

    More than 65% maintain an average GPA of 3.0 or better as undergraduates.
Eleven of the nation's top business schools host LEAD Summer Business Institutes including (as of 2008): Kellogg (Northwestern), Wharton (Pennsylvania), Fuqua (Duke), Johnson (Cornell), University of Illinois, Terry (U of Georgia), Georgetown, Ross (U of Michigan), Stanford, and Darden (University of Virginia).

Today, INROADS is an international organization with more than 55 offices serving more than 5,500 Interns at over 700 companies.

There are three keys to success for INROADS students: Selection, Education and Training, and Performance. For over three decades, INROADS has helped businesses gain greater access to diverse talent through continuous leadership development of outstanding students of color and placement of those students in internships at many of North America's top corporations, firms and organizations.

Sponsors for Educational Opportunity (SEO) is a nonprofit organization that was founded in 1963 as one of New York City's first mentoring programs for high school students of color. Over the past four decades, SEO has assisted some 3,000 students and their families. We have also expanded programs to benefit a wider age range of students, helping them develop throughout high school, college and their careers.

SEO provides services through three major programs – the Career Program, the SEO Scholars Program, and SIRV (Saving, Investing and Returning Value in Communities of Color). Over the years, SEO has grown into an established nonprofit organization with three offices, a full-time staff of 40 and programs that serve over 1,000 students, parents and alumni each year.








 

Student programs and workshops

Many programs are held at the state and regional level by state scholastic press associations. Be sure to check with your local association in addition to perusing this list.

The Dow Jones Newspaper Fund maintains an extensive list of student journalism programs and programs specifically for minority students.

It's probably the most comprehensive source for regional scholastic journalism programs anywhere.


Alabama

  • The University of Alabama holds its Minority Journalism Workshop each summer. It's an intensive workshop emphasizing reporting, writing, editing, graphics, photography, production and basic communication skills.

Arizona

  • Arizona State University holds itsSummer Journalism Insitute for High School Students each year, a program that teaches journalistic techniques, concepts and philosophies. Classroom instruction emphasizes news values, how to write leads, Associated Press style, interviewing techniques, use of quotations and attribution, how to cover speeches and press conferences, and how to write feature stories.

California

  • The Bay Area Multicultural Media Academy is held at San Francisco State University. It's an intensive two-week summer journalism workshop for Bay Area youth who are of color or are economically disadvantaged.

  • The Digital Media Academy program at Stanford University offers hands-on learning for students in the areas of digital photography and Photoshop, Web design, animation and video.
  • Newspaper by the Bay is a program run at Stanford University by Gil Chesterton. Contact him for more information.
  • The University of the Pacific's Journalism Academy teachers students the nuts and bolts of reporting, writing, photography and design.

Florida

  • The University of Florida's Summer Journalism Institute is a weeklong progam for students and advisers. It offers student workshops for: newspaper editors, yearbook editors, photographers, broadcasters and Web designers. Rising sophomores, juniors and seniors may attend; graduating seniors may not. Students participate in daylong classes and live in a campus dorm under the supervision of the SJI staff.
  • The University of Miami hosts a broadcast journalism program for students to teach them about the business. It's called Boot Camp for Your Brain.
  • The Poynter Institute for Media Studies in St. Petersburg, Fla., is holding its High School Journalism Program for students in the Tampa Bay area.

Georgia

Illinois

  • Northwestern University holds its competitive National High School Institute for a month during the summer to teach journalism to about 85 students.

Indiana

  • Ball State University in Muncie, Ind., hosts the Summer Journalism Workshops for students and advisers interested in writing, editing and design, plus special sessions for people interested in specific computer programs, magazines and the business side of things.
  • The Indiana University High School Journalism Institute is for students and teachers. It includes a series of intensive journalistic workshops for high school media staff members with concentrations on yearbook, broadcast news, newspaper and photography.

Iowa

  • The University of Iowa holds a Summer Youth Program in journalism. It includes sessions on photography, desktop publishing, Web site design and newspaper and yearbook design.

Kansas

  • The University of Kansas' Kansas Journalism Insitute teaches scholastic journalists to better meet the needs of their school publications. Ten academic sections are offered, including design, writing, digital photography, leadership, electronic journalism and beginning and advanced newspaper.

Louisiana

  • The Young Journalists Development Program will sponsor the Scholastic Summer Journalism Camp at Louisiana State University - Shreveport June 23-27. Maryland

  • The University of Maryland and the Maryland Scholastic Press Association sponsor summer programs at the university for students. Look at the main MSPA site for details on the next program.

Mississippi

  • The University of Mississippi's Summer Journalism Institute has a real college-level journalism course. Students also take another 3-hour course to complement their studies.

Missouri

  • The University of Missouri in Columbia offers a Summer Media Workshop for yearbook and newspaper students. It has units for beginners and advanced students with special sections on photography and desktop publishing.

Nebraska

  • The Nebraska High School Press Association's Summer Journalism Workshop in Lincoln, Neb., hosts about 125 student journalists each summer on the University of Nebraska campus, offering students instruction in yearbook production, newspaper layout and design, photography, graphic design, newswriting and editorial leadership.

  • The Carolina Journalism Institute is an intensive five-day regional workshop devoted to helping junior high and high school students and advisers enhance their knowledge of editing, writing, designing and production techniques for all scholastic publications and productions. http://www.jour.sc.edu/sipa/CJI.html

Texas

  • The Digital Media Academy program at the University of Texas at Austin offers hands-on learning for students in the areas of digital photography and Photoshop, Web design, animation and video.
  • The University of Texas at Austin hosts theILPC Summer Workshop for students and advisers. Students with a variety of skill levels and interests will have a chance to attend specific sequences.

Virginia

  • Hampton University will hold its FREE weeklong High School Journalism Institute in June with both print and broadcast disciplines. Students of color are encouraged to apply.
  • Washington and Lee University offers its Summer Scholars program, which include a journalism curriculum, focusing on electronic journalism, print and media lab.

Washington

  • The Washington Journalism Education Association presents its Summer Journalism Workshop for newspaper, yearbook and broadcast students at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Wash. It will include sessions in production, leadership, photojournalism, writing and more.

Wisconsin

  • The Kettle Moraine Press Association Summer Journalism Workshop gives publication staffs an advantage as they approach the challenge of covering their schools’ activities.
